What is Kundli Matching (Gun Milan)?

Kundli Matching, also called Gun Milan or Ashtakoota Milan, compares two birth charts to measure marriage compatibility in Vedic astrology. Each partner's Moon nakshatra and rashi are scored across eight kootas for a combined total out of 36 gunas. Enter both birth details above to get your score instantly.

The 8 kootas of Ashtakoota Milan

Each koota weighs a different layer of compatibility, from temperament to progeny. Heavier kootas carry more points — Nadi alone is worth 8 of the 36.

What is a good Gun Milan score?

The 36-guna scale sets the bar for a recommended match:

  • Below 18 / 36Not recommended
  • 18–24 / 36Acceptable
  • 25–32 / 36Good
  • 33–36 / 36Excellent

Nadi, Bhakoot & Manglik dosha

Beyond the 36 gunas, three doshas can override a high score. Nadi dosha (same Nadi) and Bhakoot dosha (an inauspicious Moon-sign distance) reduce specific kootas but are annulled under classical conditions. Manglik dosha, from the placement of Mars, is checked separately for both partners. Jyotish Zone reports each dosha along with whether it is cancelled.

Kundli Matching — frequently asked questions

How many gunas are required for marriage?
A Gun Milan score of 18 out of 36 is the classical minimum for a recommended match. 18–24 is acceptable, 25–32 is good, and 33–36 is excellent. Below 18, the match is traditionally not advised.
Is Kundli Matching free on Jyotish Zone?
Yes. The full Ashtakoota Gun Milan, all eight kootas, and Nadi, Bhakoot and Manglik dosha analysis are free, with no sign-up.
What is Nadi dosha and can it be cancelled?
Nadi dosha occurs when both partners share the same Nadi — Adi, Madhya or Antya — scoring 0 of 8, the heaviest single koota. It is annulled under classical conditions such as the same nakshatra with different padas, or different rashis with mutually friendly lords.
What is Manglik (Mangal) dosha?
Manglik dosha arises when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna or the Moon. We flag it as partial or full and apply classical cancellations such as an aspect from Jupiter or Venus.
Can I match a kundli by date of birth?
Yes. Enter the date, time and place of birth for both partners. The time and place fix the Moon's position, nakshatra and Lagna, which drive the koota scores and the Manglik check, so the more exact they are, the more accurate the Gun Milan.
What is Bhakoot dosha?
Bhakoot dosha comes from an inauspicious Moon-sign distance (2–12, 5–9 or 6–8) and costs the 7-point Bhakoot koota. It is cancelled when the two Moon-sign lords are the same or mutual friends.
